Samsung Electronics has produced and begun supplying 8Gigabyte (GB) DRAM for mobile, the company has announced.
Based on 16Gigabit (Gb) LPPDR4 made in the 10-nanometer process, it will level smartphone specs to equal that of a premium ultraslim notebook.
It boasts a writing speed of 4,266 megabits per second, two times faster than that of conventional premium PCs, Samsung said, and will further enhance the playing of 4K UHD videos on phones.
Last year in August, the company began making 12Gb LPDDR4 DRAM in the 20-nanometer process to produce a 4GB DRAM.
The latest DRAM has double the memory and is two times more energy efficient. It has the footprint of previous mobile chip packages (15mm x 15mm) and is thinner than 1mm, allowing it to be stacked on mobile application processors or eUFS.
Samsung said the chip is heading towards flagship phones this year.
The South Korean tech giant, the world’s largest memory chip maker, is the first to launch commercial products in the 10-nanometer process.
Earlier this week, it announced it also began 10-nanometer production for logic chips, or processors, that will likely power the Galaxy S8.
